What is WeChat?
Chinese visitors use different technology and tools than we do in the west, such as WeChat – a multi-purpose messaging, social media and mobile payment app owned by Chinese tech giant Tencent.
WeChat has more than a billion monthly users – just behind Facebook’s WhatsApp and Messenger. But it’s much more than just a messaging app: “mini-programs” (apps within WeChat) enable users to do everything from making payments to booking flights and hotels.
How important is WeChat for Chinese people?
WeChat is THE preferred technology tool for Chinese people; they spend 90 minutes on average every day on the WeChat app alone. It’s a combination of Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter and more in one app – plus a payment gateway that is their preferred way to pay for most transactions.
Chinese people love taking photos and sharing their travel experiences with friends and family back home via WeChat. It’s a hugely influential tool that councils, regions and local businesses should consider as part of any Chinese visitor engagement and acquisition strategy.
What does this mean for G’day Friends businesses?
Western businesses can’t simply get a WeChat account – there is a rigid process that requires the assistance of someone based in China. So just getting an account is a huge boost for all businesses and regions listed on G’day Friends. First and foremost, our WeChat account directly exposes all members to the massive China domestic market who are planning their trip to Australia, or researching where to visit on their next overseas journey. And of course, we can communicate with the thousands of Chinese who visit Australia every year – with over 2 million Chinese tourists a year expected by 2025. Finally, we can speak directly to Chinese people living or studying in Australia, who are significant influencers of itineraries for Chinese friends and family visiting them in Australia.
